Awesome Group of Young Folks

These teenagers have just blown me away with their talent. They bring back the original Ozark Mountain feeling through their music. Their music takes you back to the days when times seemed simple and innocent, and people were generally good hearted folk. They also play a range of Scottish music that too me, is just beautiful.

As you watch these video clips you can easily image yourself in the midst of the old days, long before television and video replaced family time. Living in the mountains, maybe hanging out on the porch while everyone in the family is either playing a musical instrument, dancing in the front yard, or just sitting in a rocking chair slappin' your knee and stompin' your foot.

In today's society, a lot of the music the younger generation listens to contains so much mis-placed anger, hurt, violence and vulgarity. It is so refreshing and hopeful to see these young people interested in this type of music. Their interest in their heritage is uplifting.

I understand that they have learned a lot of their music from various fiddle players from around the Ozarks. And they do a wonderful job of paying homage and respect to folk music. My hope is that the Possum Holler Fiddlers may inspire more of our youth to take part in something that has almost become extinct.

They have a fun rendition of your traditional square dance music that makes you want to get up and dance. They also play a range of beautiful Scottish music. Some of their songs remind me of something you would hear in the movie with Mel Gibson "Brave Heart".

Some of their song titles include the Scottish tunes "Swaller tail jig," and the American version of another Scottish tune called "Leather Britches." Both of these will get your foot-a-tappin and put a big smile on your face.

These videos were recorded at the Dutton Theatre. I hope you enjoy them.
